About LakeLevels

LakeLevels tracks current and historical water levels for thousands of US lakes and reservoirs in one place — no accounts, no apps, just the latest readings from the agencies and utilities that publish them.

Where the data comes from

Every reading on this site comes from a public data feed published by one of these organizations:

• US Geological Survey (USGS)
• Bureau of Reclamation
• US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
• Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
• Duke Energy
• Alabama Power
• Georgia Power
• Texas Water Development Board (TWDB)

How fresh is it?

Water-level readings and the catalog refresh when new data is ingested, and otherwise lag the source by at most about an hour (fifteen minutes for a current-level fallback). Each lake page links to the original source so you can check the latest official reading.

Two different percentages

Where a lake page shows percent full by volume, that is the share of the water the reservoir holds when full. Where it shows elevation vs full pool, that is a ratio of heights, and the two are not interchangeable: a reservoir can sit near its full-pool elevation while holding a fraction of its water. Both are labelled for what they are, and neither is shown unless the source publishes what it takes to compute it honestly.
